The
piece "Reflex", written for cello, piccolo, dancer, live
electronics and pre-recorded soundtrack, which later gave its name
to the ensemble, was commissioned in 1998 by the Susan Dalal Dance
Center in Tel-Aviv for the "Curtain Up" Dance Festival,
curated Eran Baniel. The idea for the piece was to collaborate with
a flamenco dancer, and Neta Shezaf, a world renowned flamenco dancer
and choreographer took the challenge, and the result was a close
collaboration in both the choreography and the composition of the
piece.
Part of the distinct character and sound of the piece is due to
the fact that the dancer dances on different types of amplified
platforms made of wood and metal, enabling the dancer to use the
platforms as a musical instrument. Mirroring this, the musicians
provide much of the movement in the piece, complimenting the dancer.
This is interdisciplinary art at its best – a perfect trio
of live music, electro-acoustic soundtrack and dance.
