Originally commissioned and performed by the Maarten Altena Ensemble
in 1996, during the "Rumori" concert series in Amsterdam.
In 1999 it was performed at the "Mishcan" Center for
Performing Arts in Tel-Aviv as part of the Reflex Ensemble's first
program, REFLEX1.
The piece is written for ensemble & a voice that seems to
be speaking, but is unheard; instead, The music reflects the voice.
The collaboration with choreographer Ruth Tamir produced a unique
choreography that creates an interactive dialogue with the music.
“No Voice, No Answer” was performed in many different
combinations both with various ensembles and with different actors
in the role of the unheard voice.
The
video of Ruth Tamir’s face was prepared for a concert in
2001 with the Ensemble fur Neue Musick of Essen/Duisburg in Berlin.
The musicians’ reacting to a blow-up of the character on
a large screen added another dimension to the piece, making the
character literally larger than life.
"No
Voice, No Answer", was created in the aftermath of the assasination
of late Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, and is dedicated
to listening, and to those whose voice is unheard.
